Is Krill Oil Good for Osteoarthritis

How does Krill Oil work for arthritis?

Inflammation because of arthritis is a leading cause of chronic joint pain. However, some types of omega-3 fatty acids help in the reduction of inflammation caused by arthritis. This relieves joint pain and stiffness, similar to NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

What kind of arthritis benefits from omega-3?

Although omega-3 has not been studied in all forms of arthritis, it has been suggested through research that omega-3 fats help with inflammatory arthritis, including, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Some evidences also suggest that it aids in controlling the symptoms of lupus erythematosus and osteoarthritis.

Is Krill Oil good for osteoarthritis?

If you know people who suffer from joint pain, you are aware that conventional over the counter medications do not always work. The reason behind it is that all of these regimes, which include, exercise, heat and cold therapy and joint protection does not target the pro-inflammatory factors.

Developing data suggests that krill oil comprises of fatty acids and omega-3, which act as synergy and anti-inflammatory compounds. The new data suggests that it helps with arthritic joint pain by neutralizing the pro-inflammatory activity.

A group of aging individuals were suffering from arthritic pain and were given 300mg of krill oil alone. It reduced the pro-inflammatory, c-reactive protein to half in a time period of just one month.

In another study, krill oil was given with the combination of astaxanthin and hyaluronic acid. Both of them are pro-inflammatory agents in the body and giving it showed fifty-five percent reduction in pain in less than three months. Moreover, sixty-three percent of them were pain free.

In contrast to the polyunsaturated fatty acids that are derived from other animal sources, krill oil fats are found in the form of phospholipids. This is in fact, helpful in elaborating their unique function to relieve joint pain.

Relieves Joint Pain

One of the leading causes of joint pain in adults is osteoarthritis. It is a progressive loss of joint cartilage, which leads to the degradation of various important components along with the loss of cartilage. Osteoarthritis causes tremendous amounts of inflammation, releasing destructive enzymes, which tear the joints eventually.

Till today, no therapy has been proven to show effective results considering reversing the joint damage caused by osteoarthritis. Chondroitin and glucosamine are natural products that have shown a variable reduction in symptoms. Especially in patients who suffer from moderate to severe pain. Furthermore, both glucosamine and chondroitin help prevent damage to the cartilage. If used for long, they can also restore the joint cartilage to what it was like during their youth by increasing the natural elasticity and pressure. Studies show that they retard, stabilize and help reverse joint damage caused by arthritis.

However, structural repair is required in arthritis, which could slow the inflammation process that is destroying the cartilage. Marine oil, such as krill oil has shown remarkable protection against inflammation, due to the omega-3 fatty acids.

Final Verdict

So, why not switch to fish oil, especially krill oil for regular joint health. It lowers inflammation and cytokines all over the body. In addition to that, it also has cardiovascular benefits.

Both fish oil and krill oil are beneficial, however, it has been proven that krill is superior when it comes to the protection of joint cartilages from inflammatory damage.
